ECS Update Term 3, Week 10 – Friday 27th September 2024

Kia ora Parents and Caregivers,

Welcome to the Term 3, Week 10 Newsletter.

As we enter the Term break it is my prayer that this period is one of refreshing.
For those of you who are travelling, we pray for safety as you are away.

We have so much to be thankful for, remember to give thanks to God for who He is and all He has done,  as the Psalmist says in Psalm 107:1

‘Oh give thanks to the Lord for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever!’

Term 3 seems to have passed by very quickly with lots to celebrate.  Just in the last 2 weeks we have had our House Haka Competition and more recently a fantastic music showcase celebration.  It is always such a highlight to see God being glorified, as students and staff use the different gifts God has given them.

Ngā mihi nui,

Alistair

School Garden Project

We are thrilled to share an exciting new project that we believe will bring great educational value to our school community: the creation of a school community garden. This garden will be a special place where students from both the middle school block and the juniors can come together, learn, and grow.

A school garden offers a unique opportunity for our students to connect with nature and each other. It will be a living classroom where they can engage in hands-on learning, develop a sense of responsibility, and experience the satisfaction of nurturing and caring for plants. It’s a space where students from both the middle school block and the junior classes can all participate in nurturing and caring for something special.

We really want to thank you all for your support of this project, between the generous support of families and different businesses in the community we are in a position to begin construction.  We are really looking forwards to this addition to the school.  We also want to recognise Faith Seow, our student Sustainability and Wellbeing leader who has really driven this project.

Non-Uniform Day -Thursday 17th October

Wellington Hills Christian College will open at the start of 2025.  This is a really exciting project to see Year 1-13 State Integrated Christian Education provision in Wellington (currently non-denominational Christian Education is not available beyond Year 8 in Wellington).

At the early stage of this project there is a real opoprtunity for us as a school community to support this work.  There are some real needs where finiancial support would be very valuable to them.  The costs of furniture alone are quite significant.

On Thursday 17th October (Week 1 of Term 3) we will hold a non-uniform day to support Wellington Hills Christian College.  Students do not need to wear their uniform on this day.  In return we ask that they bring a donation to support this new school in Wellington.

Many of you may know Tim Kuipers, current principal of Ashburton Christian School.  Tim and his family are moving to Wellington at the end of 2024, where Tim will take up his new position as principal of Wellington Hills Christian College.

Along with any financial donations, can we please ask that you pray for this new school and for Tim and his family.  A Year 1-13 Christian School in Wellington has been a large number of years in the planning, and it is exciting to see it come into relality.

If you would like to make any donation to support this work beyond this non-uniform day these can be made directly to the school. Wellington Hills Christian College – Support

Community Dental Services

Internet Safety Parents Night

Please boook this date in your diaries for an informative and helpful presentation.  We will provide more information next term, however, this is a night to make if at all possible.

It is often easy to view these events as being only suited to older children.  Can we suggest that this is very much not the case.  This event is targeted to parents of children of all ages.

Brett is a great presenter and builds this presentation from his own personal journey and faith in Christ.

New Zealand Chinese Language Week 2024

你好 (nǐ hǎo / nei3 hou2)! (Hello in Chinese Mandarin and Cantonese)

This week is NZ Chinese Language Week. We started the week with a Teacher vs Students daily phrase challenge. A big shout-out to our Mandarin-speaking student volunteers for diligently going to every class each morning to share the phrase of the day in Mandarin and Cantonese. 谢谢 (xiè xiè)! 多 謝(do1 ze6)! Thank you!

Our student leaders have counted the tally marks….  Congratulations to our 2 winning classes: K3 and T1.

At MS assembly, our senior students were taught some basic mandarin phrases, heard the Lord’s prayer in Mandarin, and did the chopsticks battle.

We have also had the privilege of having some Mandarin-speaking parent volunteers and an alumna come to share their language and culture with us. Students got to listen to an ancient Chinese parable “Blind Men and the Elephant” as well as making paper lanterns to commemorate the mid-autumn festival.

What great fun!

To wrap up the week, we learnt how to say: “I come from New Zealand” in Chinese Mandarin.
