ECS Update Term 1, Week 7 – Friday 14 March 2025

Kia ora Parents and Caregivers,

It seems hard to imagine that we are over half way through Term 1.  Next week we have our Year 7 and 8 students away at camp for 3 days.  This is a great chance for them to explore a different environment together, grow as a community and appreciate a different part of God’s creation.

Can I remind you that next Friday (21 March) is a Teacher Only Day.  School will not be open for students.  This is an important day for staff to work on the new Curriculum that is being implemented currently.

Blessings

Ngā mihi nui

Alistair

School Board Introductions

After introducing the Board we wanted to provide the chance to hear a little more about current BOT members. We’ll profile one or two of the group each week for the rest of the term.

Lucy Harema (Parent Elected Representative)

Kia ora koutou,

I have been on the Board for the past six months and am looking forward to serving as the new CEN (Christian Education Network) representative for Emmanuel.

I am married to Dallas, and our two sons are currently at school: Barnaby in Year 5 and Wilbur in Year 3. Our daughter, Ivy Pearl, will be starting later in the year.

I have a background in education and not-for-profit trust management, having taught in both primary and intermediate schools here in Canterbury, as well as in Tauranga and Blenheim. Together, Dallas and I are involved in Strengths coaching and organisational development work.  Our family attends All Saints Burwood Church, where we are involved in discipleship and marriage ministry. The Emmanuel community has been such a blessing to our family, and it is a privilege to give back in this way.

Ruth Murray (Proprietor Appointed Representative)

Kia ora, Ko Ruth Marua Murray tōku ingoa, Nō Scotland, Waitaha me Tairāwhiti ōku tīpuna, kei te noho au ki Tuahiwi.

Greetings to you all, since returning home to Christchurch with my husband Muzz and 2 youngest in 2023, we have been blessed to be reassociated with Emmanuel Christian School.

I have been involved in Education in various roles from teaching to governance since 1992 and count it a privilege to be serving as one of the EPT appointed Board members.

When not working in my role as a Policy Officer for an Early Childhood group I enjoy spending time at home, being involved in our local church and connecting with our extended whānau, hapu and iwi.

A reminder that you can make contact with the Board by email – board@emmanuelchristian.school.nz

Teacher Aide Vacancy

We have a current vacancy for a Teacher Aide within our Middle School Team.  This position would involve 4 hours per week (2 each on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings).

The Teacher Aide would be supporting students with their learning programme either within the classroom or with small groups.  A willingness to be flexible, and an encouraging supportive nature are key requirements for this role.

If you are interested please contact Alistair for an application form: principal@emmanuelchristian.school.nz

Christchurch Schools Music Festival

For Years 5-8 students only.

Our choir is excited to be part of the Christchurch Schools’ Music Festival this year.  The Festival is still looking for more applications to audition for one of the Representative groups.  They are looking for the best singers for the Junior Choir (Yr 5 & 6) and Senior Choir (Yr 7 & 8), and for talented musicians (Grade 3 equivalent and above) to audition for the Orchestra and Concert Band.

The audition process takes only 5 minutes and each student is auditioned individually. Information on what is required in the audition is on our website.

The Representative groups are on stage in the Christchurch Town Hall for every performance of the Festival (4 nights).  With more than a thousand people in the audience and 900 children in the choir stalls watching every night, it is an amazing experience they will never forget.

To find out more information or to register your child click here:

https://musicfestival.school.nz/representative-group-information/joining-a-representative-group/

Be quick, registrations close Tuesday 01 April.

Please email Naomi Langford if you need more information about this. Every year we have students in these representative groups and they are extremely fortunate to have the training they get in these groups!

I prepare the students auditioning for the representative choir auditions during a lunchtime once a week beginning later this term. Itinerant teachers should be helping to prepare students for auditions into the concert band and orchestra. If you have entered your child, please make sure that itinerant teachers are aware of this!
