This is a great chance to celebrate the year, if it is possible would be great to see you there.

Year 7 & 8 Market Day

As part of the Year 7 & 8 Enterprise Studies, the class has been creating and developing businesses that will be selling goods, services and games, where they could win prizes, for the students.

On Thursday 5th December during lunchtime (12.30-1.15pm) there will be a chance for students to purchase some goods or participate in some games.  There will be a variety of different goods and games to play including lucky dip, splashing a teacher, spicy and sour challenge, spin the wheel, squishies, key chains etc.  The price of items varies from $1 – $3.50.

On the day students will exchange their money for tickets.  Students from Harakeke – K6 will hand their money to their teacher in the monring of Market Day and then this will be recorded and exchanged into tickets which they will receive just before lunchtime.  Middle school students will be able to change their money into tickets at morning tea time.  There will be two different coloured tickets; one will represent 50c and the ohter $1.  This will be their currency to spend at the market stalls.

Parents are welcome to come to school at lunchtime to join their children at the Market Day.  Please note, there will not be any food available to purchase for lunch but students may win some lollies as a prize.

This year the money made from Market Day will be going to Tearfund – Gift for Life charity.  The Year 7 & 8 students will get to choose some gifts from a catalogue that will support Tearfund’s projects overseas.

If you have any questions regarding the Market Day please email Mrs Coleman (Year 7 & 8 Homeroom Teacher).

Christmas Dress Up Day – World Vision

On the 3rd of December students are able to come to school dressed up in Christmas attire. This could include being dressed up as a Christmas tree, Santa Claus, a Christmas elf, angels, a shiny present, simply in Christmas colours or even the Grinch!
If children prefer not to dress up then they can come in non-uniform clothes.

This will be a gold coin donation, with all the donations going to our World Vision sponsored child Happy who lives in the Chigodi Community in Malawi.  He is 14 years old and is in grade 6 at school.  He loves to play soccer.

Summer Reading

At the start of each new school year, we often see evidence of ‘The Summer Slide’ in our students. This means that some of the gains they have made in Reading over the previous year are lost.
Research shows that as much as 3 months of progress could be lost over the summer holidays. Every year!
Research on the summer slide and summer reading | Services to Schools (natlib.govt.nz)

To help with this, we invite your family to borrow books from our library to enjoy over the holidays.

Your child may borrow up to ten books for the holidays so long as:

  •  they have no outstanding loans or charges, and
  •  they are returning to ECS next year

If you wish your child(ren) to participate, please download and fill in the attached permission slip and return to the Library by Friday 6th December.. Hard copies of this form will be available from the school office or the library.

When permission has been received, your children may borrow up to 10 books each during Monday and Wednesday lunchtimes in Week 9. (9th – 13th December). If you would like to choose for them, or help them make their choices, the Library will also be open on Monday 9th and Wednesday 11th December, from 2:45 to 3:15pm.

These books will need to be returned in the first week of school in 2025. Please try to keep them together so that it is an easy job to locate them for their return. They could be kept in the bag provided by you!

Summer Holiday Reading Challenge :

Take a photo of someone reading in an interesting place! Up a tree..? In a tent..?
Where else could be fun?  (P.S. It should be a real person!)
Email these to me, and I’ll make a display in February!
