Kia ora Parents and Caregivers,

As you are hopefully aware we will be holding our end of year Prizegiving on:

Monday 11th December starting at 1:00pm
Venue:  La Vida Community and Conference Centre
               34a Hansons Lane

It would be great to see many parents, grandparents and other members of the school community join us for this end of year celebration.

Students will travel by bus to La Vida for this event.  At the end of the prizegiving they will be able to travel directly home with you.

We are aware that some students will need to travel back to Emmanuel Christian School and we have bus transport arranged for this.

To enable us to plan this transport can you please complete the form below so we know if your child will require transport back to school or will be leaving with you from La Vida.

We would appreciate it if all families complete this form so we can ensure we know the plans for each student.

Transport Form: Please complete

Elmer’s Ōtautahi Elephant Trail

The Elmer’s Ōtautahi Elephant Trail has started. If you get a chance go and see Emmanuel’s elephant (At Northlands Mall) . Every student had a chance to draw something important to them about their culture, family and beliefs. In their classes, they then had the chance to explain why this was meaningful to them. These designs and stories were then brought to life by artists from the older classes. Elephants are on display from today until the 18th February 2024
A huge thank you to all the students and to Mr Dowers and Mrs van Mechgelen who made this possible.

Summer Reading

At the start of each new school year, we often see evidence of ‘The Summer Slide’ in our students. This means that some of the gains they have made in Reading over the previous year are lost.
Research shows that as much as 3 months of progress could be lost over the summer holidays. Every year!
Research on the summer slide and summer reading | Services to Schools (natlib.govt.nz)

To help with this, we invite your family to borrow books from our library to enjoy over the holidays.
Your child may borrow up to ten books for the holidays so long as:

  •  they have no outstanding loans or charges, and
  •  they are returning to ECS next year

If you wish your child(ren) to participate, please download and fill in the attached permission slip and return to the Library by Wednesday 6th December.
Hard copies of this form will be available from
the school office or the library.
When permission has been received, your children may borrow up to 10 books each during their library time or  lunchtime in Week 9. (4th – 8th December).
If you would like to choose for them, or help them make their choices, the Library will also be open on Monday 4th, Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th December, from 2:45 to 3:30pm.
These books will need to be returned in the first week of school in 2024. Please try to keep them together so that it is an easy job to locate them for their return. They could be kept in the bag provided by you!

Summer Holiday Reading Challenge :
Take a photo of someone reading in an interesting place! Up a tree..? In a tent..?
Where else could be fun?  (P.S. It should be a real person!)
Email these to me, and I’ll make a display in February!

Christmas Mufti Day

The wonderful time of Christmas is approaching and as a school, we would love to celebrate this time together.

On Tuesday 12th of December, Emmanuel Christian School students of all ages are able to come to school dressed up in Christmas attire. This could include being dressed up as a Christmas tree, Santa Claus, a Christmas elf, angels, a shiny present, simply in Christmas colours or even the Grinch! In the past, we have had a plethora of Christmas characters wandering around the passages of our school.

This will be a gold coin donation which means that your child can only dress up if they bring a gold coin. All the donations brought will go to Ronald McDonald House to help families physically, economically, and emotionally during their health care journey. A Ronald McDonald House programme helps reduce stress and financial burden for families when they must travel far from home to access medical care for their child.

This is an opportunity that has been brought about by a few of our senior students, who have a heart for helping the less fortunate. We wanted to do this so the students will be able to get into the Christmas spirit and be filled with all the joys of Christmas.

On this day we will also be reminding the students of the true meaning of Christmas so they don’t forget that our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, came down from heaven to save us all.

Many Christmas Wishes,

Nikita, Danica & Mr LJ

CSM Outreach Strings Programme

Your child can learn to play a string instrument at school with the CSM Outreach Strings Programme. Children who learn music build confidence, increase their learning abilities, sharpen organisational skills and gain valuable social, physical and academic skills. Most importantly learning an instrument in the Outreach Strings Programme is fun. In the strings programme we teach violin, viola and cello.
Students receive a lesson each week (either individual or in a group of two or three) and will also have time in a small ensemble. Lessons and the ensemble happen during school time. Your child will play in concerts at their school and in concerts organised by the Christchurch School of Music with other orchestras, ensembles and groups. The Outreach programme works closely with the CSM Junior Symphony Orchestra (JSO).
What will it cost?
We teach in your child’s school for 32 sessions throughout the year. Each term can have a different number of lessons depending on the other activities happening at the school and children’s timetables.
The cost for the Outreach Strings Programme is $600.00 per year.
This is invoiced by term ($150.00).

We can also arrange a weekly payment plan if that suits better. If you have a community services card you may be eligible for a 50% discount on the base fee. This is dependent on the availability of grant monies.
Hiring an Instrument
You can hire an instrument from CSM. The cost for a violin is $160 per year ($40.00 per term) and a
cello is $240 per year ($60 per term). You can also hire instruments from Sedley Wells and KBB Music.
