Talofa! We are celebrating Samoan Language Week from the 28th May to the 3rd June, and we would love to have parent volunteers to come to school to share about this beautiful language and culture.
On a similar note, we are celebrating International Languages Week in 2023 from Tuesday 6th to Friday 9th June. International Languages Week is an annual event held in New Zealand to promote language and culture from around the world.
This special week provides an opportunity to showcase, learn, and promote the diverse languages and cultures in our schools, communities, and nation.
To celebrate this week, we would like to invite whānau (family members) who speak another
language to come to school as guest speakers (to share about heritage language or to teach simple phrases) or to read books in heritage languages.
If you are interested to volunteer for either week, please contact Christine Ng (Liu) at
christine@emmanuelchristian.school.nz
Also as part of the international Languages week, we have a display of posters in the library. The posters show how to write and say phrases in a variety of language from around the world.
Our school community has a growing number of languages that are spoken at home and not all of these languages are represented in our display. We are asking if there are any parents who would be able to help us with some of the missing languages.
Languages that we do not have are: Arabic, Dutch, Russian, Hindi, Cantonese, Burmese,
Visayan, Swahili, German and Sinhalese. If you speak one of these languages, and would be
happy to help, please email Bronwyn on bronwyn@emmanuelchristian.school.nz
Thank you,
Bronwyn van Mechgelen and Christine Ng (Liu), ESOL team
